چکیده

IP anycast routes packets to the topologically nearest server according to BGP proximity. UDP-based services (e.g., DNS resolvers and multicast rendez-vous points), which are based on a single request-response scheme, have been historically the first to use IP anycast. While there is a common belief in the Internet measurements community that stateful services cannot run on top of anycast due to Internet path instabilities, in this work we shed some light on the usage of anycast by Anycast-enabled Content Delivery Networks (A-CDNs). Indeed, to the best of our knowledge, little is known in the literature about the nature and the dynamics of these new players. In this paper, we provide a first look at the traffic of ACDNs. Our methodology combines active and passive measurements. Building upon our previous work, we use active measurements to detect anycast usage for servers hosting popular websites, and geolocate the A-CDN caches. Next, we characterise the traffic towards A-CDNs in the wild using a month-long dataset collected passively from a European ISP. We find that i) A-CDNs such as CloudFlare and EdgeCast serve popular web content over TCP, ii) A-CDN servers are contacted by users on a daily basis, and ii) routes to A-CDN servers are stable with few changes observed.

A First Characterization of Anycast Traffic from Passive Traces

IP anycast routes packets to the topologically nearest server according to BGP proximity. In the last years, new players have started adopting this technology to serve web content via Anycast-enabled CDNs (A-CDN). To the best of our knowledge, in the literature, there are studies that focus on a specific A-CDN deployment, but little is known about the users and the services that A-CDNs are serv...

Measuring and Evaluating Large-Scale CDNs

CDNs play a critical and central part of today’s Internet infrastructure. In this paper we conduct extensive and thorough measurements that accurately characterize the performance of two large-scale commercial CDNs: Akamai and Limelight. Our measurements include charting the CDNs (locating all their content and DNS servers), assessing their server availability, and quantifying their world-wide ...

Multidimensional facility location problem in Content Distribution Networks

Assignment problem in content distribution networks (CDN) is unsplittable hard-capacitated facility location problem (UHCFLP) because of underlying anycast routing protocol. We extend assignment problem in CDN to multidimensional facility location problem (MFLP). With our devised algorithm, assignment cost considers CPU utilization parameter along with request size and distance between client a...

Anycast Routing for Mobile Networking

This paper considers the problem of locating and forwarding network traffic to any one of a set of distributed servers or service points—primarily in the context of mobile ad hoc networks. The advantages of providing such a capability in mobile networks through the use of anycast routing techniques at the network layer are discussed. The results of a simulation study are highlighted to demonstr...

Anycast vs . DDoS : Evaluating the November 2015 Root DNS Event ( extended ) USC / ISI Technical Report ISI - TR - 2016 - 709 , May 2016

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks continue to be a major threat in the Internet today. DDoS attacks overwhelm target services with requests or other traffic, causing requests from legitimate users to be shut out. A common defense against DDoS is to replicate the service in multiple physical locations or sites. If all sites announce a common IP address, BGP will associate users around...
